Our Story
Key Mix was started in 1992 when 3 old friends met. They discussed an idea that has been tried in the past, but was never mass marketed.
The three were Bruno Hebert, Peyton Coles and Al Bere.
The idea was that they could remove a considerable amount of flour, sugar, and shortening from existing style mixes and the baker could use his local commodity ingredients. When a mix company adds flour they add costly overhead as they process, bag, store and reship this flour. Buying flour in a mix is buying the worlds most expensive flour! This savings advantage permits the use of higher quality ingredients that will, in turn, produce better baked goods. Using concentrates and adding their own flour will save the bakers a lot of money.
In 1993, the three friends incorporated as Key Mix Corporation. They used contract manufactures to produce the dry mix for them and the company grew. Key Mix grew because we offered what the other mix companies did not want to produce... Concentrates. Mix companies have huge plants with huge overheads. They need the overall poundage to keep overhead down. Some companies own flour mills. Our competition told our first customers that this can not be done, the baker can't buy flour. We disagreed. If all the mix companies can get flour with the right specification, so can the baker.
If a mix plant puts flour into their mix, they have added cost to it. That flour is now "value added". The mix plant adds labor and overhead to scale it, mix it, bag it, palletize it, move it, store it and reship it. Then add profit and commissions for the sales people and you have some of the most expensive flour on earth. Flour should cost $10-$14 per hundred weight depending on the year and grade. Not $20. Yes that is right, you are paying over $20 per hundred weight for the flour in your mix!
Since 1993 it has been the goal of Key Mix to hire the right people. We have and we grew.
In 2001 Key Mix started its own mix facility in Sykesville, Maryland. As always, our standards are high. All the equipment is new stainless steel equipment and we have very high sanitation standards.
Our AIB scores for the first 3 years have been 980 and higher! In 2005 we earned an AIB score of 1000!
